STANDARD 8- Assessment
The competent teacher understands various formal and informal assessment strategies and uses them to support the continuous development of all students.
I selected to use the powerpoint I created about Assessment and Bilingual Students for Professional Teaching Standard 8 because it demonstrates my knowledge regarding large scale assessments as well as different types of classroom assessments in education today. For this assignment, I was instructed to create a presentation about common assessments found in school today, and deliver it to an audience. I presented this presentation to a class filled with pre-service elementary education students. Topics discussed were assessments specifically for culturally and linguistically diverse students, important considerations when assessing these students, the criteria for creating or evaluating an assessment as useful, common assessment issues, and suggestions for future teachers to create fair and useful assessments for their students.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows that I created a critical and in depth presentation regarding assessments future elementary school teachers need to know about. Knowledge indicator 8C states that the competent teacher “understands measurement theory and assessment-related issues, such as validity, reliability, bias, and scoring.” In this presentation, I discuss that the characteristics that deem an assessment “useful” by using the aforementioned criteria, as well as a few others. I then used these criteria to judge sample ISAT questions with the audience. Common assessment issues were addressed, accompanied by suggestions on how to make the future teachers’ assessments effective and useful. I provided the audience with sample assessments they could use in their future classrooms that are useful to both the teachers and the students.
This assignment was one of the most valuable assignments I completed in my pre-service teacher program. Creating this presentation allowed me to become much more knowledgeable about issues and elements regarding assessments in the world of education today. Assessment is a vast topic that is extremely important in education, and this presentation demonstrates my understanding of the various topics within assessment. I feel much better equipped to analyze assessments, both large scale and classroom assessments, as well as devise useful and fair assessments that allow me to access my students authentic knowledge.
