Reflective Statement
Artifact: Family and Culture Interviews
STANDARD 2 – Human Development and Learning
The competent teacher understands how individuals grow, develop, and learn and provides learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.
I selected to use the Family and Culture Interviews and Analysis from my Fall 2012 English as a Second Language Kindergarten student teaching placement as an artifact for Profession Teaching Standard 2. I selected this artifact because it demonstrates my knowledge regarding the effect of students’ families and culture on their learning and development inside and outside the classroom. The interviews were part of an open ended assignment that required me to discover more about my students’ life and culture. I decided to interview the students about their family and culture, but through pictures instead of writing. I pulled aside three students, one at a time, and asked them to draw me a picture of their family. As they drew, I asked questions and took notes. I gathered wonderful knowledge regarding my kindergarten students’ lives, which allowed me to better develop instruction for their specific learning styles. The goal was to learn more about my students and have this new information guide my instruction.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows how I take the time to learn about each of my students in order to best meet their learning, social, and emotional needs as their teacher. Knowledge indicator 2B states that the competent teacher “understands that students' physical, social, emotional, ethical, and cognitive development influences learning.” Throughout the interview examples and the analysis, this knowledge is demonstrated through the process of discovering more about the students’ using a method that allows them to communicate their ideas and feelings best. As demonstrated through the analysis of the Kindergarten/ELL friendly interviews, I have developed action plans for guiding my instruction around the information I learned from the students. Overall, the process of conducting the interviews and analyzing the results creation of this artifact has developed my knowledge and abilities in appropriate instruction regarding students’ human development and learning.
