Reflective Statement
Artifact: Technology Lesson Plan- Floorplans using Web 2.0 Application
STANDARD 3 – Application of Technology Instruction
The competent teacher will apply learning technologies that support instruction in his or her grade level and subject areas. He or she must plan and deliver instructional units that integrate a variety of software, applications, and learning tools. Lessons developed must reflect effective grouping and assessment strategies for diverse populations.
I selected to use the Technology Lesson Plan as an artifact for Technology Standard 3 because the lesson plan integrates a variety of technological learning to tools to teach a specific subject for a specific grade level. The lesson plan uses an interactive Web 2.0 application called “Floorplanner” to use their math skills, specifically the newly learned concept of proportions, in a creative yet applicable way. Students are challenged in this lesson to apply their math skills to a technological program, so they are building their math skills and their technological skills.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows how teachers can apply technology (in this case an interactive Web 2.0 program) to the instruction of the grade level and the subject area (in this case math). Knowledge indicator 3A states that the competent teacher “understands how to apply learning technologies that support instruction in his or her grade level and subject areas,” and this lesson shows this. This artifact demonstrates performance indicator 3B, which states, “The Competent teacher explores, evaluates, and uses computer/technology resources, including applications, tools, educational software, and associated documentation.” The lesson plan forces the teacher to explore the technological software and applications that are applicable to lessons, and then are used in the classroom as a resource to teach and reinforce concepts and skills.
Creating this lesson plan has given me hands on experience with using Web 2.0 applications and seeing how they can be adapted to the classroom. This allowed me to gain confidence in creating lesson plans incorporating technology, and moved me out of the comfort zone of traditional curriculum that I am so used to. This helped me to understand that technology is going to be an integral part of my student’s classroom experience, and to adequately teach them, it is essential to teach them to use computers while teaching content area as well.
