STANDARD 10 – Reflection and Professional Growth
The competent teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates how choices and actions affect students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community and actively seeks opportunities to grow professionally.
I selected to use my video analysis project as an artifact for Professional Teaching Standard 10 because the analysis demonstrates my growth as an educator over a period of time, and my thoughtful refection and analysis of my strengths, weaknesses, and progress made. For this assignment, I videotaped myself teaching two lessons in my kindergarten ESL field placement: once at the near the beginning of the semester and once near the end of the semester. For both lessons, I engaged in a pre-lesson conference with my cooperating teacher to identify focus areas and goals for the lesson, and then a post lesson conference to assess my performance in the focus areas and if my goals were met. The goal was to focus on a certain aspect of my teaching, and critically reflect through watching myself teach and monitor my growth.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows my ability to critically reflect on my teaching by identifying my strengths and areas of improvement. This is an essential skill as an educator. I used videotaping technology to monitor my teaching growth over a few months. Knowledge indicator 10A states that the competent teacher “understands that reflection is an integral part of professional growth and improvement of instruction.” Throughout my analysis, I demonstrate my ability to reflect on the aspects integral to my professional growth and improved instruction. During the analysis, I identified focus areas for continued improvement in my instruction, and areas I improved in over time.
Creating these video tapes and the analysis aided in the development of my skills to reflect and develop professionally. I discovered aspects of my teaching that I had never yet realized. It was very interesting to see myself teaching, and it was a very beneficial experience as a teacher. If I were not to have videotaped myself teaching and reflected upon it, then it would have taken me much longer to identify the specific concerns I discovered while watching. After watching, I became more conscious of several areas of teaching, and saw improvement upon my second videotaping. Overall, this process was very beneficial as an educator, and I will continue to critically reflect using videotaping to improve my instruction.
