Reflective Statement
Artifact: Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School Prezi Presentation
STANDARD 1 – Basic Computer/Technology Operations & Concepts
The competent teacher will use computer systems to run software; to access, generate, and manipulate data; and to publish results. He or she will also evaluate performance of hardware and software components of computer systems and apply basic trouble-shooting strategies as needed.
I selected to use the Prezi Presentation I created for a schoold that I student taught at as an artifact for Technology Standard 1 because it demonstrates my knowledge and skills in using computer systems to access, generate, and manipulate data that I have collected in the field. After accessing, generating, and manipulating the data I received, I published my results using applications such as Prezi and Youtube to create a research product for the school and community. For this assignment, I was instructed to put together a presentation about the assets of the school I am student teaching at by researching the history of the school, the school report card, and by communicating with community members, teachers, and students. I presented my research findings to my fellow classmates in the Elementary Education program using a Prezi presentation. Included in the Prezi presentation are photos, student interviews, and a movie I created using video and photo footage from the school. It came together to give an informative, yet interesting presentation using a variety of advanced technological tools.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows my ability to basic technology operations and concepts to create a useful tool that benefits the school, the community, and my fellow teaching peers. Performance indicator 1F states that the competent teacher “demonstrates knowledge of uses of computers and technology in education, business and industry, and society.” Throughout this presentation, this knowledge is demonstrated through the variety of multi-media skills used to create this online presentation.
Creating this presentation aided in the development of my technology skills, my research skills, and my oral presentation skills. I discovered many new techniques for making research come alive in a presentation in a way that is interesting to those receiving the presentation. I learned how important it is to communicate with all different people around the community to grasp the true assets of a school, and how sharing those findings are beneficial for many different parties. Overall, the creation of this artifact has developed my knowledge and abilities in technological productivity tools, and I will continue to create products using these newly developed skills.
