Reflective Statement
Artifact: Problem Based Learning- Pond Unit
STANDARD 1 – Content Knowledge
The competent teacher understands the central concepts, methods of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines and creates learning experiences that make the content meaningful to all students.
I selected to use the Problem Based Learning Ponds Unit Plan as an artifact for Profession Teaching Standard 1 because it demonstrates my science content knowledge in creating lessons for a unit. Within is a problem based learning unit overview along with two hands on, student centered field trip lesson plans. For this assignment, I was instructed to create a problem based unit with three other classmates. In the document, you will find the lessons I was in charge of creating. During the creation of these lessons, I needed to consult a few books and the internet concerning my content knowledge about ponds. I needed to discover different characteristics of ponds in order to develop effective lessons.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it demonstrates my own content knowledge regarding the subject, as well as applying this knowledge to create effective lessons within a unit. Knowledge indicator 1B states that the competent teacher “understands the processes of inquiry central to the discipline. ” Throughout the lesson, this knowledge is demonstrated through developing a lesson in which inquiry is driving the students’ learning. The students will take a field trip to a local pond at the beginning of the unit in order to investigate the pond and develop thoughts for how to solve the problem, and later on in the unit, the students revisit the pond in order to actually perform a student designed experiment. This lesson is created so that students are responsible for their learning and creating their own knowledge. This is much more effective than students studying ponds out of a book. It was with my content knowledge that I was able to devise this inquiry based lesson that led students to discovering information about the ponds.
