Philosophy Statement
My philosophy as an elementary school educator
has evolved over the past few years, guided by my intense passion for teaching
and the diverse classroom experiences and learning environments to which I have
been exposed. I feel confident that my
unique and genuine teaching philosophy will provide me with a strong foundation
as I prepare to officially become an elementary school teacher and have a
classroom that I can call my own. I know
that over time, my philosophy will continue to evolve and solidify, but I am
prepared to be flexible and allow for my philosophy to continue to be molded by
my students, colleagues, and the ever changing world around me.
In order to establish a successful classroom community and learning environment, I need to ensure that students feel safe in a warm, inviting, an positive setting. I will strive for my classroom to be a place where my students feel they truly belong. I need to create and maintain positive and effective learning environments that address all different talents, cultures, and needs of my students. At the root of this mission is being genuinely excited about the students and the lessons each and every day. I will leave any negativity I have at the door in the morning, and greet my students with a smile and a genuine greeting expressing how happy I am to see them each and every day. This genuine love for learning and love for the students will create a positive and happy environment where all students feel valued. Without this environment, the potential of learning will be greatly affected.
Another beginning step in creating and maintaining this positive learning environment is by developing strong, trusting, and personal relationships with each of my students. I will get to know each of my students for who they individually are, and guide my teaching and instruction based off of their personal interests and learning styles. It’s essential for me to be aware of the different cultures students come from, and to have this knowledge guide my creation and implementation of lessons. In order to meet the needs of a culturally and linguistically diverse classroom, I will implement a multicultural curriculum in order to meet the diverse needs of my students.
The next step in creating the most learning efficient classroom as possible is to have extremely high academic and behavior expectations for each student in my classroom. Even though some students may come to my class with difficult circumstances that are out of my control, it is my job as their teacher to keep the expectations of their work and behavior high in order to teach preservation to reach success. I align myself with the “warm demanders” mentality, which describes demanding excellent work in a loving and safe learning environment guided by praise.
In order to effectively reach these goals, I must effectively communicate with my students, their parents, my colleagues, and other school support in order to make a safe, positive, and effective learning environment. Knowledge of my resources for how to best reach my students is extremely important, and I believe that I need to depend on the people around me for support and outside opinions. In order to gain respect and trust with my students, parents, and colleagues, I must exhibit professional conduct and dispositions that reflect my commitment to establishing and maintaining a community in teaching and learning environments. I need to use my resources of people that may know my students more than I do (parents) or understand better methods of teaching students with specific needs (colleagues).
As an elementary school teacher, I need to understand the best pedagogy for guiding the development of inquiring and reflective minds. In order to do this, I will incorporate many activities that force students to think critically. I believe thinking critically will develop the skills students need to continue to succeed in school and the real world. These critical thinking aimed activities and lessons will facilitate students towards inquiry. In order to facilitate inquiry based learning, creativity and critical thinking skills, I will focus on group collaboration, rather than all teacher based instruction. My job is to be a guide for them to develop the essential skills they need to succeed in school and life.
It is important that as a teacher, I make sure I know the subject matter I am teaching, and that I present this information in a creative, relevant, and interesting way to the students. I believe it is very important to assess my own teaching methods, and to constantly adjust to my student’s needs. While teaching, I believe it is essential for teachers to use multiple resources, especially technology, in lessons and for students to use during activities and assignments. This will enhance the teaching and learning experience, and will help to develop a range of skills for the students. I believe it is my job to establish myself as a professional in the community I teach, to establish a safe, positive, and effective learning environment for my students, and to create an environment through my guided instruction to develop inquiring and reflective minds in my students.
