STANDARD 2 – Personal and Professional Use of Technology
The competent teacher will apply tools for enhancing personal professional growth and productivity; will use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems and will promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology resources.
I selected to use the my future classroom website as an artifact for Technology Standard 2 because it demonstrates my ability to use technology to develop a profession website that is used to communicate to students and their families the happenings, expectations, and work of the class. For this assignment, I was instructed create a way to communicate the classroom management plan and expectations to the parents of my future students. I decided to create a website so that I can continually add to it and parents can always know where to find out class information. The goal was to create a resource for parents that will give them all of the information they need in order to support their child’s learning in my classroom, and also a forum to post recent happenings and pictures of work the class created.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it shows that I can use technology as a professional resource to communicate with parents and create an online portfolio of the classroom creations. Knowledge indicator Knowledge indicator 2A states that the competent teacher “understands how to use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problem.” Throughout the website, this knowledge is demonstrated through the use of a variety pages and visuals in order to communicate effectively with parents using the professional website. This allows parents to know how to contact me, the expectations of the class, supplies, upcoming events, and recent happenings of the class and their work.
Creating this website aided in the development of my skills to create a professional document that communicates with parents, as well as my skills in using technology. Choosing to use technology is sometimes intimidating, but it is a great way to communicate and create professional documents. It was difficult to consolidate the amount of information to put on the website in order for parents to read only information that is important and pertinent for them to know to aid in the success in their child’s education for the year. Another issue with using technology as the avenue for reaching parents is that all students and families will not have access to the internet. This means that paper copies would need to be distributed for all of the information posted on the website that parents need to know. Overall, the creation of this artifact has developed my knowledge and abilities in using technology in my professional development, and I will definitely use this website one day.
