Reflective Statement
Artifact: Technology Paper: Cyberbullying
Technology STANDARD 4 – Social, Ethical, and Human Issues
The competent teacher will apply concepts and skills in making decisions concerning the social, ethical, and human issues related to computing and technology. The competent teacher will understand the changes in information technologies, their effects on workplace and society, their potential to address life-long learning and workplace needs, and the consequences of misuse.
The paper I wrote about Cyberbullying in America is used as an artifact for Technology Standard 4 because it is a sum of the research I found concerning the social, ethical, and human issues related to technology. This artifact is used as a tool to see how technology can be abused by students, and that it is the teachers job to understand how changing technology affects his or her students. The standard addresses the importance of teachers understanding the consequences of misuse of technology, and cyberbullying is an extremely prevalent misuse of technology with detrimental effects on the students.
The paper on cyberbullying is an appropriate representation of Technology Standard 4 and its indicators because it addresses real issues and solutions for teachers in their schools. Indicator 4A states, “The competent teacher understands the social, ethical, and human issues related to computing and technology.” The issues and solutions surrounding cyberbullying presented in the paper helps teachers to understand these deeper issues included with increasing use of technology in schools. Indicator 4C states, “The competent teacher describes strategies for facilitating consideration of ethical, legal, and human issues involving school purchasing and policy decisions.” The paper discusses ways for district and state policies to be challenged to include specific protocol regarding cyberbullying. Teachers should understand the need for teacher training on cyberbullying and the need for funding to create programs to prevent cyberbullying in schools.
The Cyberbullying paper opened my eyes to the world of cyberbullying and how serious and complicated of an issue it is in America’s schools today. Not until writing this paper did I realize how complicated of an issue it is between creating safe school environments and violating students’ first amendment rights. I learned about the need for states and districts to write in specific policies and procedures for preventing, intervening in, and providing consequences for cyberbullying. I also realized how important my role as a teacher is in creating a safe environment where students can bring up issues of cyberbullying to me. Teachers need to be advocates against cyberbullying in schools and create school wide programs to fight against it.
