Reflective Statement
Artifact: Second Grade Biography Unit
STANDARD 4 – Planning for Instruction
The competent teacher understands instructional planning and designs instruction based upon knowledge of the discipline, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
I selected to use my second grade biography unit as an artifact for Profession Teaching Standard 4 because it demonstrates my ability to develop a complete, hands on, student centered unit teaching reading, writing, and social studies. In the unit, I describe ways I meet the needs of all learners that weren't addressed in the original unit. In the lessons described, I included planning for instruction, planning for management during the lessons, and I address state and curriculum goals. For this assignment, I was instructed to recreate a unit in my full time student teaching placement to better meet the diverse needs of the classroom. During the creation and implementation of these lessons, I scaffolded the instruction and material for the students and continually built off of their prior knowledge and interests.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of the standard because it demonstrates my own knowledge and skills in creating short and long range plans for a second grade appropriate unit on biographies. In these the lessons, I incorporated plans for different learning styles, different assessment types, and inclusive plans for students with disabilities. Knowledge indicator 4B states that the competent teacher “understands how to develop short- and long-range plans consistent with curriculum goals, learner diversity, and learning theory.” Throughout the lesson, this knowledge is demonstrated through my carefully planned lesson sequence in scaffolding the material to maximize potential learning.
Students demonstrated a tremendous amount of learning over the three week unit. They created incredible projects using their writing skills, reading skills, art skills, and presenting skills. They created their autobiographies and biographies, and also engaged in independent and partner biography quests to learn more about important people in the world. The lesson sequence, engaging lessons, and hands on projects made for a very fun and educational unit.
